The Ramayana Path

Day 01 – Arrival / Negombo
As soon as you touchdown in Sri Lanka, we take you to the vibrant seaside town of Negombo for some rest and relaxation.
Day 02 – Negombo / Chilaw / Kandy
After catching up on some rest in Negombo, our trail begins as we make our way towards the quiet town of Chilaw and visit the Munneswaram and Manavari Temples. It is believed that these temples have been in existence for thousands of years and is closely associated with the popular Indian epic “Ramayana” and its legendary hero-king “Rama”.

After that, we head towards the hills and visit the cultural capital of Sri Lanka, Kandy. We will then take you on a short guided tour around the city to see the sites, before we call it a night.

Day 03 – Kandy / NuwaraEliya
From Kandy, the Ramayana path continues as we make our way towards NuwaraEliya, the mountainous soul of Sri Lanka. En route we stop in Ramboda to get a glimpse of Vedanta, which is the science of the self, found in the Shri Bhakta Hanuman Temple, which was built by the Chinmaya Mission of Sri Lanka.

After that, we continue our journey and visit the Seetha Amman Kovil, which is completely devoted to Sita, the loving companion of the revered Hindu God, Rama.

Day 04 – NuwaraEliya / Bandarawela
After resting in NuwaraEliya, our journey continues as we head towards Bandarawelaand on the way, we stop at the GayathriPeedam temple. It is believed that this location was chosen as it was a spiritual revelation and the temple is dedicated to the Goddess Gayathri, making it an important site of the Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka.

Later, we visit the Divurumpola Temple. It is a Buddhist temple and is believed to be directly linked to the Ramayana trail and one of the most historically important locations in Sri Lanka. In Sinhalese, Divurumpola literally means “Place of Oath” and is believed that this was the place where Sita experienced the legendary “Fire Test” or “Agni Test” in order to prove her virtue and pureness to God Rama after being rescued by him.

Day 05 –Bandarawela / Ella / Katharagama
From Bandarawela, we make our way towards Katharagama. En route to the location, we stop in Ella, which is surrounded by magnificent hills and is dotted with cloud forests, waterfalls, tea estates and unbelievable natural beauty. Ella is an important destination in the Ramayana trail and we take some time to explore the Ravana Falls and the Ravana Caves, which is a network of tunnels created by King Ravana himself. After visiting these sites, we head towards Katharagama for more of the story.

Day 06 – Katharagama
On arrival, we visit the Katharagama Temple, which is dedicated to the Buddhist guardian deity, KatharagamaDeviyoand the Hindu War God, Murugan. It is one of the only temples in the country that attracts people from all religious backgrounds, which includes Buddhists and Hindus and sometimes Muslims as well as Christians.

Then, we make our way towards Ussangoda, which is an area of high ground near the sea that is designated as an archeological site. It is covered with grass and a few pockets of pigmy forests and legend has it that it was one of the landing strips of King Ravana’sPushpakaVimana.

After that, we head towards Galle to visit Rumassala, which is another important site in the Ramayana trail. Legend has it that when Rama’s brother Lakshman was injured in battle, the only way he could be healed was with certain types of medicinal herbs that were found in the Himalayas. Then, the Monkey God Hanuman went to the Himalayas, but could not remember the names of the herbs and so, he broke a piece of the mountain and threw one part away. The part that was thrown away was named Rumassala.

Then, we make our way towards the Seenigama Temple that is located in a small island near the town of Hikkaduwa. The temple is dedicated to God Devol and is around 300 years old, although some believe it is over a 1000 years old. The temple is very sacred to the people of the area and to all Buddhists, as it is rumored that God Devol revolves around the problems of human beings.

After that, we head towards Colombo and visit the Sri Anjaneyar Temple, which happens to be the only Panchamuga or five faced Anjaneyar Temple in Sri Lanka. There are statues of different Gods in the temple, which includes Rama, Sita, Ganesha and more, however the main deity of this temple is Sri Hanuman.

Day 07 – Colombo / Departure
After some rest and relaxation, we get ready for your journey back home. From Colombo, we take you back to the airport and hope that the memories you made in Sri Lanka will be with you forever.
